“The Spirit is Willing, But the Flesh is Weak”

2022.01.15/16
From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Alex Poon

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

In Matthew 26 Jesus, after falling on his face in prayer, praying words that never cease to amaze us, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will”, found his disciples sleeping.

He said to Peter, “… the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41b)

In one sense or another, you may find yourself weak these days. And that’s ok. Sometimes we get up in the morning finding ourselves just in a bit of a sour mood. We wonder why. It wasn’t like the previous evening was eventful in that there was anything to upset us. You might even think to yourself that there isn’t one particular issue in your life that is causing you great stress. Or there might be. There might be something causing you to wake up in anxiousness, or as the saying goes, “on the wrong side of bed”. Sad to say, but that reality is ok too.

How does our Lord Jesus invite us to respond?

He went and fell on his face in prayer when the most trying moment of his life was just around the corner. And then he showed understanding to his disciples when he found them asleep – even if their spirit was willing, their flesh was weak.

And then Jesus went and prayed a common prayer familiar to all of God’s people, “your will be done.”

The point is this; consider, on the days where you want to pray but find it difficult to pray, to pray the words gifted to us by God and the inspired authors.

Consider praying the common words of God’s people.

Consider finding the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 and praying as he teaches us to. Consider opening the book of Psalms to allow the Biblical authors to usher us into seeking God in all circumstances.

You see, in God’s loving heart of compassion; He knows His children need Him. He knows that for those children who depend on Him, our hearts are longing to cry out to Him – but sometimes we just don’t have the words to muster up. And so, He left us with some.

In particular seasons we will experience tiredness, despair and indifference and we’re assured that without exception we’re all going to experience seasons where prayer is dry and honestly really challenging.

And so, it’s like God has left us with handrails to grip onto so that we might know how to pray and what to pray.

Know this; prayer doesn’t have to be full of enthusiasm and passion, but sometimes it will feel like a challenge of enduring stamina.

Keep praying and may you long to pray, still.

Our Lord inclines his ears to us, to hear our every word and cry. And He understands both the joy and longing that fills our hearts.

When the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. When we are falling on our face about to enter into a deep darkness, our Lord Jesus invites us to lean into the words that keep us tuned to Him.

Let us follow Him, let us pray together,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. (Matthew 6:9-13 ESV)
For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Alex Poon

The Jethro Leadership Principles

2022.01.08/09
From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Simon Lee

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Every year at the beginning of the year, we have an installation service for the new elders, deacons and deaconesses who will be serving in the new year. We are enormously thankful to all the people who serve so faithfully year in and year out. This is especially so when we have just gone through 2 years of the Covid pandemic and to see how we carried on the Church ministries using all sort of means and methods. It is so gratifying to witness that as our people serve God faithfully despite all the setbacks we experienced. All of you will receive the commendation from Jesus Himself: Good and faithful servants!

Here in 2022, after a year of roller-coaster ride through the Covid pandemic with our hopes down, up and down again, we are facing the Omicron variant that has spread rapidly through the population with number of cases of infection up to over 4,000 daily. Yet, just as the Lord brought us through the past two years, I am confident that the Lord will again help us through. We shall overcome!

The new team is characterized by new vitality of new board members and coworkers, and the continuation of stability of experienced board members and other faithful team members. We are also grateful for a strong team of pastoral workers and administrative team. Praise the Lord! Leaders, let us together with our members return to Scriptures to seek guidance on how to lead the Church forward.

The Spirit leads me again to the story of Moses and the problem he had in trying to lead about 2-million people through the wilderness, as found in Exodus 18. Moses was totally exhausted, and he tried to deal with all the problems brought to him, both big and small. Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law saw Moses and was very concerned about him, because Moses was sitting from dawn till dusk judging over the people’s affairs. When Moses was asked why he did that, he replied: “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will. When they have a dispute, it is brought to me and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and laws.” (15-16) Jethro couldn’t believe what he heard and said: “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you and you cannot handle it alone.” What follows as his advice to Moses what I like to call the 3 “Jethro Leadership Principles” which I would like to share with you here.

#1 – Teach others the Words

Moses had to learn to teach others the laws of God so that they know how to live by them. Teaching (and preaching) is the most important thing a leader can do in his or her ministries. Before dealing with the “how’s”, a leader must show those he leads the “what’s” and the “why’s.” Unfortunately, in our pragmatic society, both the leaders and those who are led value more the “how’s” over the important truth that is the reason and basis of what we do and want to achieve.

Paul in encouraging Timothy in his ministry to be above all diligent in God’s word, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:14-16) We should all lead based on His Word.

#2 – Delegate others to serve

Moses was instructed to “select capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain – and appoint them as officials … have them serve as judges for the people at all times.” (21-22) The character of the leaders we elect and appoint is critical to doing the task well, they include the qualities of God-fearing, trustworthiness and integrity. A problem we face today in the leadership of the church around the world is that these qualities are being replaced by self-confidence, self-trust and worldliness, a version of the power and politics of the secular world.

Again, Paul teaches Timothy in 2Tim. 2:1,2, “You then, my child, …what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” Train the trainers, teach the teachers. I hope we can do this at RCAC.

#3 – Take on the most difficult cases

Moses should concentrate on the most difficult tasks which are his major responsibilities and leave the rests to others whom he had appointed. A good example is found in Numbers 36 where the issue of land inheritance for women came up. Moses had to exert his leadership in resolving the issue. Senior leaders must be empowered to deal with the major issues and not be handcuffed in exercising his authority. There must be trust given to the senior leader, and of course, the senior leader must also earn the trust of those he leads by personal example. Paul instructs Timothy with this words: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” (1Tim 4: 12) We hope that all our leaders, in our own areas of responsibility, will lead by example.

From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Mark Liu
Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Greetings brothers and sisters, Happy New Year! May we deepen our experience with God and through this, live a joyful life in the new year.

When thinking about a joyful life, how would we interpret? We may use external environment to determine what a joyful life is. This is the secular view. As children of God, a joyful life comes from within and transcends the influence of the external environment. This is what Paul said in the book of Philippians: “be rejoice always”.

You may ask, how can we have a joyful life? The answer is to live out the life of the gospel. And this is the theme for RCAC in 2022, through learning about our denomination’s fourfold gospel, we can grasp the foundation of a joyful life, which is to live out the life of the gospel.

The four-fold gospel is: Christ, our Saviour; Christ, our Sanctifier; Christ, our Healer; Christ, our Coming King. Everything is built on Jesus Christ and as a result, the four-fold gospel is closely linked.

To live out the life of the gospel requires us to see everything under the correct perspective through the four-fold gospel. When we look at everything with the right perspective, the response to everything will change. In many cases, our reaction to things comes from how we interpret the matter and interpretation comes from our perspectives. When we look at things from the wrong perspective, all subsequent reactions can be problematic. Why is it so? The book of Genesis tells us that because Adam and Eve sinned, the result was “their eyes opened.” I think “eyes open” is very ironic. Because “their eyes opened”, the result was fear and shame, and because of fear and shame, they hid when hearing God was approaching them.

To have a correct view of everything must be through the external help, because we have no way to gain this through our own efforts. This is why the gospel is good news. Because we no longer need to rely on ourselves, but on the salvation of Jesus, so that we can be “born” again. This new beginning is to help us see everything clearly by wearing the lenses of the gospel.

I recently changed my glasses, and the clerk at the eyewear shop reminded me to wear this new pair of glasses frequently so that I can adapt as soon as possible. I believe that the crux of living out a life of the gospel is also this, do we often look at everything with the lenses of the gospel? Of course, this requires practice, and practice must come from encounter in life. The fourfold gospel is to help us live out the life of the gospel. And this nurtures a joyful life.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of RCAC. Thank God for using RCAC to be part of His Great Commission. Looking forward, may God continue to use RCAC. Let us encourage and build each other up. May we experience His wonderful deeds through RCAC.

Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Mark Liu

2021 Christmas Scriptural meditation on the Light

2021.12.25/26
From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Simon Lee

A. Living in a dark world with artificial light

  • … the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Cor. 4:4)
  • The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” (Mat. 4:16)

B. Pointing a dark world to the true light

  • “And you, child (John the Baptist), will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Lk 1:76-79)
  • Jesus said, “… I am the light of the world.” (Jn. 9:5) Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (Jn. 8:12)
  • For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Cor. 4:5-6)
  • And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. (Rev. 21:23)

C. Being the shining lights to the dark world

  • … Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
  • Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. (Lk. 11:34, 35)
  • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)
  • But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (I Pet. 2:9)

Christmas Evangelistic Meeting

2021.12.18/19

From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Francis Chan

In the past year, many people have relocated from Hong Kong to Vancouver. Of the 3 fellowships I am overseeing, there have been no less than 30 HK people visiting us during this period. Thanks to the Lord, more than half of the newcomers have decided to stay in our fellowships and to call RCAC their new spiritual home.

Yet most of the people relocating from Hong Kong are not yet Christians and will not take the initiative to attend churches. Many of them left Hong Kong because they chose not to accept the ‘new normal’ of Hong Kong on its political, social, and educational fronts. A considerable number of them have participated in the social movements and have experienced psychological distress, which requires healing.

Coming to Canada, they must cope with numerous challenges and adjustments. For those who have come as a matter of emergency, very few of them are psychologically and financially prepared. As these people would put it, their departure from Hong Kong and arrival in Canada are not about immigration but fleeing from disasters. When I thought of their situation, there is a deep yearning to reach out to them, to help them, and to share the gospel with them. I therefore discussed with our senior pastor about holding an evangelistic meeting on Christmas day with the hope of sharing with them the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God! Pastor Simon loved and welcomed this idea. So we decided in early November to hold an evangelistic meeting during AYAYA’s worship time on Christmas day.

Since the beginning of our preparation for this meeting, my heart has been trembling and sometimes, I feel worried about the outcome. What will the weather be like that evening? What will the pandemic be like by then? Will there be guests coming to the meeting? Will brothers and sisters sacrifice their family time on Christmas night to accompany their guests to attend the meeting? Although there are many uncertainties, I am at peace when I pray in my heart. I understand that all that the Lord is asking of me is to respond to the Holy Spirit, to place a gospel seed in the hearts of our not-yet-Christian friends. The rest is up to the Lord.

In our preparation, prayer comes first. We set up a group of 10 people to pray for all guests who have been invited. This same group will attend to our guests should the latter choose to respond positively to the altar call that evening. For marketing and promotion, we have made a poster. It was designed by a brother who had only arrived in Vancouver for less than a month. We mainly use social media to send out e-posters and registration links to invite people to come. In addition, we have also printed 25 copies of our poster, all of which have now been posted up in different places in Richmond. For other supportive ministries (eg praise teams, care teams, etc), many brothers and sisters have come forward to serve. Now, I must focus on seeking the will of the Lord when I am preparing a message for the meeting. I humbly ask every single one of you to pray for our evangelistic meeting, to pray for our brothers and sisters serving in the meeting, and to pray for those whom God has chosen and will bring to the meeting. May we all work together faithfully to advance the kingdom of God and may God’s will be done in the RCAC family.

The trumpet has sounded, the harvest is ripe, the order has been issued, where are you?!
