What is the Purpose of Discipleship?

August 27/28, 2022
From the Pastor’s Desk:Pastor Mark Liu

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Hello brothers and sisters. Thank God for the opportunity to share with you my thought through this platform.
Recently I have been reflecting on a question, what is God’s will for us? We have to have an awareness of this to know why we are here today. Behind this question represents a manifestation of a relationship. If we were not children of God, we would never want to know His will. We want to know because we know that the purpose behind this is especially given to us. What is God’s will for us? In my understanding, that’s for us to grow in Jesus Christ, and that growth is what discipleship is all about.
Discipleship is not a bunch of courses, but through the content, we build up our knowledge of God, and through our lives, let this knowledge be experienced in our lives three-dimensionally. A pile of words cannot change our lives, but through relationships. And this relationship is not the relationship between people, but the relationship between us and God. When we are babies, we know the world, we know ourselves, through our relationship with our parents. However, when we continue to hope for approval from people, we lose our freedom, because we become slaves to people and constantly hope to gain approval from people.
To truly know ourselves is to know from our Creator, and because of Jesus Christ, we can become children of this Creator. Through Jesus we know what love is and how much God loves us. This is not a matter of reading between the lines, but a manifestation of life, and that is the purpose for which Jesus Christ came to the world. He came to show God’s love concretely in front of us. And it is through the cross that we can truly know ourselves and how much God loves us. So why do we need to be disciples? It is to grow in Jesus Christ. We think that growth is about things we can do. A person, despite having many talents, inner-self can still be a child. That is, growth is not through what we do. True growth is not relying on the world to tell us who we are, but relying on God. This cannot be expressed in a few words, it can only be understood through the experience of God in life. Discipleship is about deepening our knowledge of God. Participating in the Bible Study group is not enough, to become disciples, we must know God more deeply. This understanding does not only stop at the systematic absorption of knowledge, but at the same time, one must start putting on new glasses to see everything. These glasses are the glasses of salvation. When faced with difficulties, we need to start reminding ourselves that the challenges are given by God on purpose for us to grow. Why is it deliberate, because of the purpose behind it, and the reason is that God loves us and wants us to grow. In order to have joy, we must grow up. This is the deep meaning behind the Great Commission of Jesus Christ.
May the brothers and sisters of the RCAC grow in Jesus Christ and discover that growth brings joy, the joy that the world cannot give.

Pastor Mark Liu

The foundation of God’s church

2022.08.13/14

Hello brothers and sisters. Praise the Lord for the opportunity to share with you my thought through the “Pastor’s Desk.

Recently, I have been thinking about what kind of image a church should have before the world. I refer to different articles, which talk about how to reach new friends, or what elements should be used, etc. I believe these are all very helpful.  But I think it is important to go back to the Word of God to contemplate.

Paul wrote a letter to the church in Ephesus (The letter of Ephesians) talking about the church.  When we thought Paul would spend a lot of time explaining what the church should do, he brought our attention to the very basics of who we really are.

Ephesians 1:4 (ESV)

even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

Paul is telling us here that we are chosen by God before the foundation of the world.  We are chosen by the One who created the heavens and earth. We are chosen to be God’s spokesperson. We know that a very important element in marketing is to find a spokesperson. The best spokesperson is the one when people see them, they immediately think of the product the spokesperson endorses. God’s will is for us to be His spokesperson. This is the purpose of setting up the church.

To be God’s spokesperson, we must have a good relationship with Him. But it is impossible for sinners to represent the Holy God.  Paul tells us that we are holy and and blameless. Here comes the problem: we are not without flaws. No matter how careful we are in life, we can never be blameless. We can be blameless, not because Paul lied, but because of the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ and because of His blood, we can be blameless.  He took the blame so that we can be blameless.

After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, He once appeared to the disciples and even let the disciples ran their fingers through the nail-marked hand. The question is, Jesus Christ has been resurrected, what is the reason for keeping the nail-marked hand? That’s because that nail-marked hand is our proof that we are blameless. Because of that nail mark, we are blameless. God not only wants His only begotten Son to carry nail-marked hands to eternity, but also wants us to be His spokesperson.

When we come together, we become the church. A church that belongs to God is, most fundamentally, a place where a group of people-who-respond-to-God’s-love gather together and show their response to God’s love through different methods. When the goal of a church is to respond to God’s love in different ways, the place becomes a bright lampstand.

Brothers and sisters, let us respond to God’s words with our actions, and RCAC will naturally become a bright lampstand.

Pastor Mark Liu

RCAC @ Tsawwassen

2022.04.23/24
From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Mark Liu

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Hello brothers and sisters, it is by God’s Grace that I have the opportunity to share with you some of the thoughts I have received from God.

This week’s theme is about the Great Commission. This was commanded by our Lord Jesus before He returned to the heavenly home. This is our mission. As for the Mandarin Ministry, thank God for giving us the opportunity to participate in this great commission.

I remember that in February of this year, I talked with my wife about whether we could carry out some gospel work in Tsawwassen. Afterwards, we prayed, and we felt that this was a good opportunity for our ministry to go out and directly participate in the work of the gospel. I shared this idea with Pastor Simon and gained his support. I also learned that in his heart, he had always hoped to have the opportunity to bring the gospel to this place. I believe this is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Carrying out the work of the gospel requires the partnership of a local church. I was reminded of Pastor Matthew Wong, because he told me before that he wanted to take me to visit Tsawwassen Alliance Church (TAC), hoping to build a relationship with the church. With Pastor Simon’s encouragement, I called the church and contacted the church’s senior pastor, Pastor Cory Anderson. I shared with him the vision and expressed the wish that Pastor Simon and I could visit him. Coincidentally, Pastor Cory mentioned to us that he also has a vision to encourage brothers and sisters in his church to participate in the Great Commission. However, what he did not expect was that a Chinese Alliance church would take the initiative to contact him about the ministry of evangelism. God’s work is truly beyond our imagination.

With the support from Pastor Cory, I immediately discussed the details with two interns (Reuben and Phoebe), and at the same time, shared this idea with Pastor Ming. What a surprise is that a couple who participated in Pastor Ming’s church also planned to move to Tsawwassen. They were contemplating about whether God’s intention was for them to participate in evangelism work in Tsawwassen. All of these are prepared by God. We participate in it and find that God has already prepared everything we need well in advance, and when the time is right, everything will be revealed to us. It is not what we can do for the Lord, but the Lord invites us to experience Him so that we can taste the joy of working with Him.

We will hold a Mother’s Day event at TAC on 5.7, hoping to attract the Chinese living in the local area. Through origami and calligraphy, we hope that we can get in touch with the Chinese living in the local area. You’ll find a poster for this event at RCAC. RCAC is a blessed church, and we need to bring this blessing to the place where God leads. Hope you can pray for this event. I would also like to express my special thanks to the Board of Elders for their support. May the name of the Lord be exalted and be glorified.

2022.Jan.01/02

From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Mark Liu
Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Greetings brothers and sisters, Happy New Year! May we deepen our experience with God and through this, live a joyful life in the new year.

When thinking about a joyful life, how would we interpret? We may use external environment to determine what a joyful life is. This is the secular view. As children of God, a joyful life comes from within and transcends the influence of the external environment. This is what Paul said in the book of Philippians: “be rejoice always”.

You may ask, how can we have a joyful life? The answer is to live out the life of the gospel. And this is the theme for RCAC in 2022, through learning about our denomination’s fourfold gospel, we can grasp the foundation of a joyful life, which is to live out the life of the gospel.

The four-fold gospel is: Christ, our Saviour; Christ, our Sanctifier; Christ, our Healer; Christ, our Coming King. Everything is built on Jesus Christ and as a result, the four-fold gospel is closely linked.

To live out the life of the gospel requires us to see everything under the correct perspective through the four-fold gospel. When we look at everything with the right perspective, the response to everything will change. In many cases, our reaction to things comes from how we interpret the matter and interpretation comes from our perspectives. When we look at things from the wrong perspective, all subsequent reactions can be problematic. Why is it so? The book of Genesis tells us that because Adam and Eve sinned, the result was “their eyes opened.” I think “eyes open” is very ironic. Because “their eyes opened”, the result was fear and shame, and because of fear and shame, they hid when hearing God was approaching them.

To have a correct view of everything must be through the external help, because we have no way to gain this through our own efforts. This is why the gospel is good news. Because we no longer need to rely on ourselves, but on the salvation of Jesus, so that we can be “born” again. This new beginning is to help us see everything clearly by wearing the lenses of the gospel.

I recently changed my glasses, and the clerk at the eyewear shop reminded me to wear this new pair of glasses frequently so that I can adapt as soon as possible. I believe that the crux of living out a life of the gospel is also this, do we often look at everything with the lenses of the gospel? Of course, this requires practice, and practice must come from encounter in life. The fourfold gospel is to help us live out the life of the gospel. And this nurtures a joyful life.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of RCAC. Thank God for using RCAC to be part of His Great Commission. Looking forward, may God continue to use RCAC. Let us encourage and build each other up. May we experience His wonderful deeds through RCAC.

Your servant in Christ,

Return to Church – Experiencing God’s Presence In Person

Sep 11-12, 2021
From the Pastor’s Desk: Pastor Mark Liu

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

It is by God’s Grace that I have the opportunity to use this forum to share my thought.

In my last sharing, I share with you about the essence in God’s creation, that is, the importance is not creation itself but the purpose of creation.   Because we see wisdom through the purpose of creation. This wisdom is God Himself. He created everything in order and there is a purpose behind creation, not a random formation, but there is wisdom behind.

In the entire creation, human creation is perceived as the prime of the entire creation. However, I am curious about how the Bible describes the seventh day, because the Bible says that God has rested. Why would God need rest? What does it mean to rest? In our understanding, resting means the one is tired. If God is tired, it means that God is limited because He can be tired. Is that true?

It turns out that in the Bible, “rested” represents presence. In other words, when all creations have been created, God chooses to be with the creations at this time. This is the meaning of “rested” in the Bible. It is not that God is tired, but that God chooses to be with us. The presence of God marks the beginning of all creation to operate according to the original intent of creation. In other words, the presence of God is the beginning of everything. Every time we think about creation, the last day is when God rests. In fact, the seventh day, the day God rests is the beginning of everything, because God chooses to be with all creation, and all creation begins to function accordingly.

If we look at it this way, then we understand the true meaning of Sabbath.  God tells us to keep the Sabbath, not because He wants us to do nothing, but to commemorate God’s presence, to praise God and to enjoy God’s presence. This is worship. Sabbath-keeping is not about doing nothing, but glorifying God and enjoying His presence. Our worship should demonstrate this. Worship itself is not a ritual, but to be with other brothers and sisters to sing and glorify God. Of course, praising and glorifying God does not only happen at a specific time, as there should be a heart of worship at all times. However, we must have time to be separated so that we can enjoy the presence of God. This is the meaning of worship. We are moved and encouraged through the presence of God so that we can continue to live as God’s people in the world.

We are currently working hard to prepare to return to church, with the goal of bringing brothers and sisters together to worship God in person. This kind of worship is needed. Worship helps us remember who we are. We are God’s people, and we are God’s children. The church provides a place for us to enjoy His presence. This is the meaning of returning to church. Worship is not what God needs, but we need. Through worship, we enjoy God’s presence, receive His encouragement and teaching, and then continue to bear witness to His name in the world.
