Be prepared for danger in times of peace

Jun 26-27, 2021
From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Collins Kung

Without knowing it, I have lived in Richmond for 30 years, and the townhouse that I live in is more than 30 years old. In the past 5 years, my house has had several water pipe leaks. Fortunately, God blessed us and we found out in time so that there was no damage of our properties, and the Strata Management Company also repaired it for us. In fact, many units of our townhouse complex have the same problem. It is because the water pipes used to build the house at that time were “grey pipes”, which would break easily over the years and it does not meet the current building codes. There are still some water pipes in my house hidden underground. The situation is like a time bomb. I don’t know when it will burst and cause damages.

Praise God, in the last year’s Owners General Meeting, we passed a resolution to replace the water pipes of all units, and all the owners needed to contribute a special levy for the repair. Although it costs a lot of money, it solves the problem once and for all. Unlike in the past, the problem was only addressed in a piecewise manner.

At the end of April this year, we received a notice that the water pipe replacement project will begin in May, and I saw some units have begun the work gradually.  I thought the management company would notify me in advance. However, on Tuesday May 18 morning, when I was preparing my devotion sharing for the pastoral staff meeting on that day, I suddenly heard the sound of an electric drill coming from my neighbor. I went to the neighbor to find out what happened. The worker has started the work at my neighbor’s house. I asked the supervisor, when would be my unit’s turn, he said: I knocked at your door this morning, but no one came to open the door, so we went to the next unit.  I did not hear the door bell and missed the opportunity. But I think it was a special providence of God, because if the workers came to my house and started the work, I would not be able to have my devotion sharing in the meeting on that day. Besides, I did not have the time to prepare the place for them. To make a long story short, the supervisor promised me that he would come to my unit the next day, Wednesday, so that I had enough time to move the furniture and other things at home, and my wife was off from work for a few days, so that we had enough time to do the preparation work. This is indeed God’s protection and care!

Later, I learned that this replacement project was not only to replace the underground water pipes, but to replace all the water pipes within the whole house. So, there were many holes in the walls around the house and even in the ceiling, all of a sudden, the house looks like a battlefield.

For the following two weeks, I have to get up early every morning to shower and brush my teeth and prepare the place before the water supply was turned off. Every day I wonder if the workers will come to work or not. Since they work on a very irregular schedule, a group of people came to work on this part and another group will come for the next steps (such as patching the walls, painting, etc…). I felt that I have to be watchful and wait every day. They may or may not show up, and only on Saturdays and Sundays can they rest. Brothers and sisters, isn’t it our Lord Jesus telling us to be watchful and wait, and prepare for His return?

In the process of replacing the water pipes, because the faucets in our bathrooms were old and did not fit well with the new water pipe and caused leaking, the plumber suggested that we buy new faucets at our own expense, and they would replace them for us with no extra charge. As a result, we seized the opportunity and bought three new bathroom faucets for them to install for us. Now, my house has been updated and renewed, and the faucets are no longer dripping like they used to be.

Now, my house has been renewed, and I believe I can live in peace for many years. In fact, our lives must be renewed so that we can continue to serve the Lord. Brothers and sisters, how often do we come before the Lord and let Him renew our lives? In this water pipe replacement project, I experienced and learned four things: God’s divine providence, wait vigilantly, seize the opportunity, and renew my mind.  Hope this reflection will encourage each other.

Facing the Trial of Crisis- Father vs Son

Feb 27-28, 2021
From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Collins Kung

In the last week’s worship sermon, I talked about King Hezekiah’s facing the trial of crisis. He trusted in the Lord to overcome the crisis. He was facing the invasion by the Assyrian army and the Assyrian general had arrived in Jerusalem.  2 Kings 18:17 “And the king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rab-saris, and the Rabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. When they arrived, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is on the highway to the Washer’s Field.  Hezekiah was facing the extreme pressure of Rabshakeh, which shaking the confidence of the people in Judah, he chose to go to the House of the Lord to pray. At the same time, he took the initiative to ask the prophet Isaiah for prayer. As a result, God sent a message of comfort and deliverance to him through the prophet. Hezekiah’s performance is in sharp contrast with his father Ahaz.

Chapter 16 of 2 Kings wrote:  Ahaz, the father of King Hezekiah, king of Judah in the southern kingdom, began to reign.  The Bible describes him as an evil king. Unlike his father David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord his God, he sacrificed and made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree and even burned his son as a sacrifice. At that time, the northern kingdom of Israel and Judah were in a state of hostility. The northern kingdom allied with the Syria kingdom, Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to wage war on Jerusalem. They besieged Ahaz.

Isaiah chapter 7 wrote about the crisis at that time. Isaiah 7:2 “When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.” God told the prophet Isaiah to comfort Ahaz. Isaiah 7:3 “And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. God was even willing to give a sign to Ahaz so that he could relax and calm down. This sign is the famous Immanuel prophecy in the Bible. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”.

However, Ahaz ignored it and chose to rely on Assyria to rescue Judah from the plight. He sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and said, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.”  He took the silver and gold that was found in the House of the Lord and in the treasures of the king’s house and sent a present to the king of Assyria.  Later, he personally went to Assyria to meet with the King of Assyria, introduced the Assyrian altar, built another Assyrian altar in the House of the Lord, and offered sacrifices there. And he moved the bronze altar that was before the Lord from the front of the House, from the place between his altar and the house of the Lord, and put it on the north side of his altar. This showed that Ahaz has no God in his heart.

The same crisis, the same place, but different reactions. Let’s reflect deeply on the reactions of the two kings, hoping that you and me, whether in adversity or prosperity, can trust in God, remembering that we are redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ through His precious blood.

Reflections on the Bible Conference: The Church in the World but not of the world

Nov 07-08, 2020
From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Collins Kung

Due to the Covid 19 this year, the Greater Vancouver Bible Conference moved to live broadcast online. However, because of the engagement of church ministries, I was not able to watch the live broadcast. Fortunately, the organizer VCEMF had recorded the messages and made it available on the youtube channel, so that I can watch and listen to it afterwards.  The Speaker, Rev.  Samuel Chan comes from Toronto, and his messages can better meet the needs of the North American churches.  I like to share some of my reflections on the third meeting.

Rev. Chan put forward four biblical absolutes:

  1. We live in two kingdoms of conflict

The first reality is that we live in a kingdom on earth (Canada), and at the same time we are also the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven.  The kingdom on earth is a secular government, not a theocratic kingdom.  We are living in the tension between the two kingdoms.

  1. We all have dual citizenships

The issue of allegiance arises when the value of the secular government conflicts with the value of the Kingdom of Heaven.  The Bible teaches us to obey God first, and then obey the government on earth. 1 Peter 2:13 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the king, as the supreme authority,…17. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the king.”

  1. The government is established by God, the purpose is to restrain evil

Romans 13:1 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God… 4. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

  1. The church is established by God to make disciples of all nations

Then Rev. Chan led us to think about an important question, how do we as a church live in the world but not of the world?

  • The church must focus on the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, spread the gospel and train disciples. This includes five aspects: teaching the truth of the Bible, living out love and righteousness (generosity, equality, advocacy, commitment), building and strengthening faith, serving the community and finally praying.
  • The church should encourage brothers and sisters who are willing and have burdened to go into the world, to be the salt and light in different areas and aspects and to manifest Christ. We should support them and pray for them.
  • Finally, he used three English words to describe the three forms of churches:
  1. Isolate: a church that keeps itself isolated from the world and ignores the
  2. Integrate: a church that compromises with the world and follow the world, gives up its beliefs, and agrees the secular values.
  3. Infiltrate: Let the truth of Jesus Christ infiltrate every corner of the community, a church that is in the world and not of the world.

I hope that RCAC will continue to move in this direction and become a church in the world but not of the world.  I encourage everyone to go online and watch or review the messages.  Let us work hard together in advancing the gospel ministries.

My life under the pandemic

Jul 18-19, 2020
Rev. Collins Kung

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Time goes so fast.  It has been 19 weekends since physical gatherings at church were suspended on March 14/15. I miss you all.  When I recall those days we worshipped together at church, different congregations hustled and bustled in RCAC on Sunday, the picture reminds me of Psalm 122, A Song of Ascents Of David. The psalmist was excited when they can worship together in the House of the Lord. Psalm 122:1 – I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”.  It is such a grace to be able to worship God together.

As the pandemic continues, physical gatherings have changed to online worship, online prayer meetings and fellowship. My life is about the same as usual with a few changes.

Daily devotion:

The prophet Daniel has left us a beautiful example. He prayed and worshipped God at the same time, same place regularly even King Darius had issued the decree. Daniel 6:10 : “Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”  I keep my habit waking up early in the morning, draw close to God and start my devotion as usual. On Sunday I worship God at the regular time.

Growth and learning:

The pandemic has driven me to learn and use technology more.  Google has become my technical consultant.  If I don’t understand, I Google.

In addition, there are some online theological courses that I can choose to study. I read a book – 《Coronavirus and Christ》written by Rev. John Piper.  It is a very good book and I recommend it to you. It is a free e-book, available in audio and video versions, and in Chinese and English. Under the pandemic, this book can help us to strengthen our faith, bring us back to the core value of our faith, and to focus on our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer and caring:

Under the pandemic, physical gatherings are prohibited, some church brothers and sisters felt lonely and depressed because of the lockdown. God reminded me of their needs; I contacted them and cared for them over the phone.  We prayed together for the church. I encourage you to actively care about our brothers and sisters in Christ, if God reminds you of them, please don’t hesitate to contact them.

Offering and donation:

The pandemic has hit all walks of life. Churches and charity organizations are no exception. I am so grateful that my family members are still employed. God moves me to give to help people who are in difficulties locally and around the world. Brothers and sisters, if God blesses you, don’t forget the needs of others. 1 Tim 6:18-19 : “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

Physical exercises:

Under the pandemic, I still find time to exercise. I love biking and going on walks nearby. Sometimes, I will go to other areas such as Stanley Park and Crescent Beach.  I enjoy staycation. It turns out there are many local places that I haven’t been before.

May the Lord bless you all, let’s grow together under the pandemic, and keep our body and spiritual life healthy.

  1. 我們仍然要為未來計劃,因為沒有計劃,就準備失敗 “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”。
