Dear brothers and sisters, may I wish all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

When we study history, we will know that Thanksgiving was established to thank God for His protection and provision. In other words, the object of Thanksgiving is God, not the food on the table. Today, when we celebrate Thanksgiving, we quickly think of turkey or all the delicious food. The focus has changed from thanking God for the provision to what kind of food will we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, or traveling to other places, etc. Over time, the purpose of establishing Thanksgiving has changed, and the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving has been forgotten.

In fact, this phenomenon is not unique to today. The Bible tells us that when we forget who we are, the way we deal with many things will change. This week’s sermon will talk about the relationship between the Sabbath and Jesus. In Luke 6:5, Jesus said “He is Lord of the Sabbath.” The Pharisees at that time set up a lot of conditions for keeping the Sabbath, and forgetting the original purpose of keeping the Sabbath. Keeping the Sabbath became a yoke for people at that time.

In Genesis, after all creation was completed, God saw that everything was good, especially when He saw human beings, God described as very good. And the Bible tells us that God rested on the “seventh day.” The “rest” mentioned here does not mean that God needs to rest. But it’s the beginning of everything. God chooses to be with people. The Sabbath is not about resting and doing nothing, but about returning to the Creator, and this return is demonstrated through worship. The purpose of worship is not what God needs, but what we need. When we forget to worship, we forget who we are. This forgetfulness will appear in our lives. This forgetfulness causes us to be unable to rest.

Today we all hope to have rest. This rest is not available until we return to heaven, but can be found today. We can rest because we place all values on Jesus Christ. Our worth is not gained by what we do, but by our Lord laying down His life so that our worth is fully reflected. When we replace Jesus with other things, we think that our own value is reflected through these things, but we don’t know that these things have no eternal value. Only Jesus Christ can give us eternal value. Only when we are willing to think carefully and discover that this is grace, will we be grateful. Only by being grateful can we have rest.

In this Thanksgiving, will you be thankful for salvation? How will you reflect this gratefulness in your life?

May God bless you all.  May God bless RCAC.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of RCAC, it is by God’s Grace that I can use this column to share with you some of my recent thoughts.

Two weeks ago, RCAC was was very busy as the American and Canadian Chinese Alliance Church Associations used the RCAC as the venue to hold their bi-annual conference. In the meeting, not only we learned about what the association has been doing in promoting more cooperation among difference Chinese Alliance Churches, but also some of our missionaries work in different parts of the world.  The corner is about the development of missionary ministry. Missions is in our DNA. We need to actively respond to the call of Jesus Christ to bring the gospel to every corner of the world.

Speaking of missions, we must mention the Joint Missions Conference (JMC) held after the CCACA conference. This year’s theme is “Go Into All the World”. What does it mean to RCAC?

When we think of the World, we see the mission trips to different countries.  This is a very natural thinking as we are charged to bring the gospel to the end of the world.  That said, however, we may need to have a different interpretation of the meaning of the “world”.  To some of us, this may mean to the family members, or the neighbours living besides us.  This can become our world.  This can become the world which God puts in our heart.  On the other hand, there are many communities here and we ought to bring the gospel to them.  The Rosewood Manor ministry is about this where we bring the gospel to the senior residents living there.  They have difficulties coming to church and we are bringing the gospel to them.  There are many communities which are reluctant to come to church, will we then bring the gospel to them.  When Jesus was preaching about the Kingdom of God, He did not sit at one place waiting for the people to come, He went to meet with people, especially those who were despised by the society.  Will we have the heart to bring gospel to them.  Will these communities become our “world”?

In Philippians 1:7 ” 7It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.”  We are all partakers of grace.  This grace is the gospel.  Partaking the gospel mean we receive and at the same time we share.  This is who we are.  This is RCAC.  Are we ready?

May God bless you all.  May God bless RCAC.

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC. It is by God’s Grace that I can use this channel to share with you what I have experienced during this period of time.

As you may know, in the past two weeks, my family, a family of five, went back to Taiwan to visit my in-laws. During this journey, Fiona and I also visited our missionaries serving there. (Sorry, I can’t share their names here)

Chiayi Alliance Church has just started meeting at a new location. Fiona and I were very excited to see with our missionaries.  The first came to my mind was why choosing Chiayi to set up a church?  It turned out that the purpose of setting up the Chiayi Alliance Church is to reach out to a group of local farmers and those who are living in poverty, so that they can hear the gospel. I was very moved by this vision.  Because to do so, our missionaries must first be a neighbor to these people, which means that the life of our missionaries is very simple. In addition to the subpar living conditions, our missionaries have to learn to use the local vocabulary. Although they can speak Mandarin, the vocabularies are very different from what they used to, as a result, they need to re-learn the vocabularies. In addition to these, our missionaries also learn to use motorcycles for transportation purpose. What they put on is not a little, but all, including the children who also need to learn to adapt in the new environment; however, they have joy. why? Because they know the purpose of being there.

During the worship service, one of the missionaries shared the view which illustrates this point – what they are called to do is to share the good news with the local people. This good news is the salvation of Jesus Christ. Because this is good news and they are called to share, they would not dwell too much on other matters. No matter how difficult the environment is, they are willing to spend their lives to communicate with the local people and share the good news without hesitation.

When we asked them if they need assistance, what they thought about was how can they use the facilities to connect with local people. For example, they hope to have a small area for the children to learn Bible Stories. What they think about is not their own needs, but how they can share the gospel in different ways.

How do we view the gospel? Is the gospel good news for us? How do we respond to this good news? We are all children of God because of this good news. Have we thought about how to pass this good news out? In the hearts of our missionaries, it is not how to make their children’s lives better or have a good education, but to make the Chiayi Alliance Church a channel for the gospel. Fiona and I are very willing to be their partners.  I hope you will feel the same way. If you want to know how to assist the gospel ministry in Chiayi, please contact me or Fiona.

Thank you.

May God bless you all.  May God bless RCAC.

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

It is by God’s Grace that I can use this space to share with you the latest about the Mandarin Ministries.

Before the Lord Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His disciples, including us, a command:

Matthew 28:19-20 “19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations...”

Our Lord commanded us to go and share the gospel. There are many ways to do so. Besides the ministry at Tsawwassen, we have also started a monthly worship at Rosewood Manor, a nursing home, since the end of April this year.

At the end of last year, we contacted the person in charge of the nursing home to explore whether we could conduct worship there once a month. Praise the Lord that we received very positive response. Since the COVID-19 pandemic was still serious at the time, we decided to wait until the spring to start this ministry.

Besides the brothers and sisters from the Mandarin ministry, some brothers and sisters from different Cantonese Congregation also participate in this ministry. On April 30th, a group of 12 people (including two elders, Katherine Yeo and Joe Tong) came to serve in this nursing home.

I am very grateful to the nursing home for providing a staff who is dedicated for coordinating with us. Before the worship started, we witnessed the staff of the nursing home, working hard to bring those who are in wheelchairs or resting in beds to us. There are also some who come on their own. Before the worship started, there were 28 people who live in this nursing home joining us.  Praise the Lord.

We chose two hymns, “Give Thanks” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness” as the first worship hymn. After that, I used John 3:16-17 to share the message. Since most of the participants are English-speaking, I shared the message in English. After sharing, the Holy Spirit inspired me to make a calling. Several people raised their hands, accepting Christ as their own Savior. For those who could not raise their hands, I encouraged them to say “yes”. I remember a resting-in-bed lady who kept saying “yes”.  I was touched.  Thank God, ten friends accepted the salvation. Afterwards, I invited co-workers to go to these people and pray for them. At the end of service, I also got to know a couple who had been missionaries in Haiti. They are now living in this nursing home. Praise the Lord for allowing us to serve, not only to those who have not heard of the Gospel but also those who used to serve the Lord elsewhere.

On the way home, I kept humming “Give thanks” in my heart. Thank God for enabling us to serve, bringing the Gospel to those who live in the nursing home. The Gospel should not stay in church building. The Gospel should reach to different places so that people can hear.

May God bless you all.  May God bless RCAC.
