Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

Matthew 9:16-17 (NiRV)
16 “People don’t sew a patch of new cloth on old clothes. The new piece will pull away from the old. That will make the tear worse. 17 People don’t pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst. The wine will run out, and the wineskins will be destroyed. No, people pour new wine into new wineskins. Then both are saved.”

In the Children’s Ministry, we have undergone a complete paradigm shift as we moved to welcoming families “In Person”. Before the pandemic, most of our volunteer teams served together for 40/52 weeks in the year. Team members developed strong relationships with one another and were able to develop deeper relationships with those kids who came to church regularly. Volunteer teams were composed of experienced brothers & sisters and also those were new to serving children. This was the “Old” way of doing church. Who could imagine a church without Sunday School for kids?

But the interruptions that the pandemic has brought has meant that we could no longer expect volunteers to worship in one service and then serve with children for a different service. Concerns about COVID exposures are legitimate and serving among the kids (who were unvaccinated in the early days) meant that many volunteers were not ready to serve “In Person”. Teams that had served together for many years were suddenly frozen in time and while those who could jumped online to serve kids, it was a big change from what used to be ministry for kids.

Finally, when the time came for us to safely gather together again “In Person” as a church (Sept. 2021), we could only do so according to the specific congregation. So while the various congregations have been able to re-connect “In Person”, for many kids & some youth, they are no longer able to see or be with their peers. Especially as the families are likely to just come to church just once over the week-end. Missions Hour, Age divided Sunday School, Kids’ Worship Team, …these things no longer exist.

Now, in this “New” way of gathering “In Person”, kids are only able to see/connect with those from the same language group or worship service. While we are grateful to be gathering together in any manner, in this “New” format, we are only able to offer Bible Time as one large group of children learning together in which I repeated the same lesson 4 times/week-end until mid-April where it was no longer sustainable. I am forever grateful to our head Deacon (Terence Fong) & the Children’s Ministry Team Leaders/members in all the “In Person” services who sustained and faithfully taught while I was on the leave of absence.

In this “New” way of hosting Bible Time, everything takes longer. Relationships between leaders (who only serve once/month) and kids (who may/may not be coming regularly) are still forming but it all takes more time. Whether it’s on the volunteer level or between kids, relationships are now taking place with face masks in order to keep each other safe. The one thing that has not changed is our desire to point children to God and have them respond to Him in obedience.

In this passage, Jesus reminds us that whether “Old” or “New”, we must not lose sight of the bigger picture. While we are not winemakers, God has called us to make disciples and we can’t just rely on the “Old” ways to accomplish this goal. Forcing the “Old” ways into “New” situations just doesn’t work. We need to continually explore and adjust to “New” ways to share the love of Jesus even while we may not have figured it all out just yet. In fact, this exploration forces us to rely on HIM more and not just on familiar routines or habits. May God continue to show us how to prepare “New WineSkins” for all the “New Wine” that HE has entrusted to us.

親愛的列宣家弟兄姊妹:

當我們返回“實體”聚會時,兒童事工的模式經歷了徹底的轉變。在疫情大流行之前,我們大多數的義工一年52星期中會一起服侍40 星期。團隊成員彼此建立了牢固的同工關係,並與那些定期回教會聚會的孩子建立了深厚的關係。義工隊員包括經驗豐富和剛開始服事兒童事工的弟兄姊妹。這是建立教會的“舊”模式。有誰能想像一個沒有兒童主日學的教會呢?

疫情大流行帶來的挑戰是我們不能再期望義工先出席崇拜,然後在另一個時段參與兒童事工服事。許多義工還沒有準備好返回“實體”服事,擔憂會暴露於新冠病毒。這是可以理解的,特別是在兒童還未有接種疫苗之前。多年來一起事奉的團隊突然被迫改變服事的模式,一部份就轉到網上服事。相對與以往的方式,的確帶來了很大的變化。

去年九月起,我們再次開放“實體”聚會了。但兒童事工的事奉模式就只能改變,從原本的主日學模式,變為在每一個崇拜的兒童聖經時間。因此,雖然各堂會眾已經能夠“實體”聚會,但對於許多孩子和一些青年來說,他們不能夠再與其他群體的同年齡的孩子一起聚會了。特別是因為這些家庭很可能在週末只會來教會一次。過往的兒童事工運作模式已經不復存在了。

現在,這種“實體”聚會的“新”模式,孩子們只能接觸到來自同一語言的肢體。無論是什麼方式,我們很高興能夠服事這些小朋友,在“新”的模式中,我們只能提供聖經時間,每個週末我重複同一堂課四次。這種模式只能維持到四月中旬,因為我無法再以這種方式持續下去。感謝兒童事工總執事方富誠(Terence)和所有服事團隊,他們在我休假期間無間斷地忠心服侍。

在“新” 模式下進行聖經時間,組長(每月事奉一次)和孩子(可能或不可能定期來)之間的關係需要更長時間去建立。無論是事奉團隊或是孩子之間,為了確保彼此的安全,仍然需要配戴口罩。沒有改變的是我們帶領孩子指向上帝並引導他們以順服的心回應祂。

馬太福音9:16-17經文,耶穌提醒我們,無論是“舊”還是“新”,我們都不能忽視背後的教導。我們不是釀酒師,但上帝呼召我們作門徒,我們不能僅僅依靠“舊”的方式來實踐這一個目標。或者是以強迫把“舊”方式引進“新”的情況是行不通的。我們需要不斷探索和適應“新”的模式來分享耶穌的愛,事實上,這種探索迫使我們更加倚靠祂,而不是靠我們熟悉的慣例或習慣。願上帝繼續向我們展示,如何為祂託付給我們的“新酒”準備“新皮袋”。

Last issue: Pastoral Reflections on July 1 (1)

On July 1, we celebrated Canada Day here. I know, as I enjoyed a statutory holiday. This year is the 155th Anniversary of Confederation. But for those of us who are from Hong Kong, we know that July 1 this year was also the day to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

In reflecting on these two anniversaries, the question that comes to mind is: What is there to celebrate? In Canada, in the past year we have been reminded again and again of the horrific history of mistreatment and injustice to the children from the First Nations at the Residential Schools and the trauma of their survivors. Furthermore, in the very place we are living in, there are so many other social problems such as the drug overdose crisis and the rising crime rate, just to mention a few.

In Hong Kong, we know that ten of thousands of HongKongers, on both sides of the political spectrum, had decided to leave Hong Kong, looking for a better haven for themselves and their families, many in such a hurry that they did not even say good-bye to their relatives and friends. The anxiety and fear of these people are compounded by the difficulties of finding and settling into a new home in Canada and elsewhere. Yes, “what is there to celebrate”?

The truth of the matter is whether in the birth and development of a nation as in Canada from over 150 years ago, or in the return of a colony to its motherland, as in Hong Kong, in the last 25 years till now, we witnessed prosperity mixed with upheavals, progress mixed with injustice, hope mixed with disappointments, bringing anxiety and tears to all looking for a better future. This is the sad history and geography of the migration of people since the beginning of times, repeated over and over again around the world. If there are achievements to celebrate, then there are also disappointments to grieved about. Again, what is really there to celebrate?

Abraham and the people of faith come to mind. We read in Hebrews 11 these words: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, and he went out without understanding where he was going. 9 By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is God… 13 These all died in faith without receiving the things promised, but they saw them in the distance and welcomed them and acknowledged that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth. 14 For those who speak in such a way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 In fact, if they had been thinking of the land that they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (8-10, 13-16) Yes, Abraham and many others “aspire to a better land,” and ultimately it is “a heavenly one.” Those words ring true even today.

The truth is there is no place on earth that does not have its share of unrest and problem, because we are all sinful people living in a sinful world. The church does not and cannot offer any solution to political problems, but the church is where true faith, ultimate hope, genuine love can be found. Lasting peace (shalom) and total redemption are found in the church because “In God we trust.” People of all background, race or political background can come to Christ, the Prince of Peace. This is what we can truly celebrate.

七、一(七月一日)的教牧反思(二)

列宣家的弟兄姊妹,

上期:教牧反思(一) :7月1日,我們在這裡慶祝加拿大國慶。今年是加拿大聯邦成立 155 週年。但對於我們來自香港的,7月1日也有另外一個含義:因為這一天也是香港特別行政區成立25週年的日子。兩個背景截然不同的周年紀念日喚起了我截然不同的感受。

回顧這兩個七1週年紀念日時,我在想:有什麼是值得慶祝的?在加拿大,在過去的一年裡,我們一次又一次地讀到有關於寄宿學校中原住民兒童遭受虐待和不公正待遇的可怕歷史,以及那些倖存者所遭受的創傷。此外,我們也看到很多社會問題的出現,例如藥物濫用和犯罪率上升等等。

在香港,我們知道數以萬計的香港人選擇離開香港,為自己和家人尋找更好的避風港,許多人急得連向家人好好說聲再見的機會都沒有。這些人又因為來到加拿大或其他國家而面對不同適應及定居的問題而不能釋懷。是的,“有什麼值得慶祝的呢”?

事實是,無論是加拿大或是像香港,無論什麼時候,我們都可以看到繁榮背後夾雜著動盪,進步中夾雜著不公義,希望中夾雜著失望,一心為了要尋求更美好未來的人卻經歷了焦慮和淚水。這是人類自古以來遷徙時會遇到的,在世界每一個角落重覆地發生。“有什麼值得慶祝的呢”?

此時,亞伯拉罕和有其他信仰的偉人浮現在腦海中。我們在希伯來書11 章讀到:

8因著信,亞伯拉罕在蒙召的時候,就聽命往他將要承受為業的地方去;他出去的時候,還不知道要往哪裡去。9因著信,他在應許之地寄居,好像是在異鄉…。10因為他等待那座有根基的城,就是神所設計所建造的…。13這些人都是存著信心死了的,還沒有得著所應許的,只不過是從遠處看見,就表示歡迎,又承認他們在世上是異鄉人,是客旅。14因為說這樣話的人,是表明他們在尋求一個家鄉。15如果他們懷念已經離開了的地方,還有可以回去的機會。16但是現在他們所嚮往的,是一個更美的、在天上的家鄉。所以神不以他們稱他為神而覺得羞恥;因為他已經為他們預備了一座城。(8-10, 13-16)是的,亞伯拉罕和其他許多人都“渴望有更美好的土地”,其實唯有“天上的家鄉”才能夠真正滿足他們。

地球上沒有一個地方是真正的樂土,因為我們都是罪人。教會不可亦不能為政治問題提供任何解決方案,但是教會是一個地方讓人能夠找到終極盼望和永恆的愛,可以找到真正的平安(shalom)和完全的救贖,因為“我們信靠的是上帝”(In God we trust)。無論是什麼背景、種族或政治立場的人,都可以投靠這一位「和平之君」耶穌基督。而這個才是值得我們慶祝的。

July 1, 2022 was a special day to me, thought-provoking, as one born in Hong Kong but who has for years made Canada my home. On July 1, we celebrated Canada Day here. I know, as I enjoyed a statutory holiday. This year is the 155th Anniversary of Confederation. But for those of us who are from Hong Kong, we may know that July 1 this year was also the day to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). These were two anniversaries with very different background, evoking in me very different feelings and emotions.

I still remember when Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of the confederation, my wife Lydia and I took a trip to the Maritimes Provinces in Eastern Canada, together with my daughter Hannah and my son in law Eugene as tour guides. One place we visited was Charlottetown, P.E.I., where the conferences on the confederation of “Canada” all started in 1864. It ended in the birth of Canada in 1867, marked by the proclamation into law of the Constitution Act, 1867 (British North America Act).  On that trip, I learned a lot about Canada and its history, both the glorious and the ugly, of the treaties with the First Nations, colonialism, confederation, and history of immigrations.

One thing I learned was the name “Canada” comes from aboriginal roots, the Huron-Iroquois word “Kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement,” the name given to the French explorers and settlers of the day, referring to the village of Stadacona, the site of the present-day City of Quebec. Canada was previously also referred to as a Dominion (part of the British Empire) by the British. But interestingly, it was New Brunswick’s Sir Leonard Tilley who suggested the use of the word “Dominion” of Canada, reportedly inspired by Psalm 72:8, “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”  C&MA of Canada uses the 5S’s to denote its span of ministries, and the 5th S, refers to “sea to sea” (Dominion of Canada). As an Alliance pastor, my prayer on July 1 in recollecting this was: May the Lord truly have dominion over Canada, which once had a lots of Christian roots!

My mind wandered to Hong Kong. As you know, on July 1, 1997, China regained control of the British colony of Hong Kong after 156 years. It was in 1839 that Britain invaded China to crush opposition to its opium trade and in 1842 the unequal Treaty of Nanking was signed ending the First Opium War, and the Island of Hong Kong was ceded to the British.   In September 1984, after years of negotiations, the British and the Chinese signed a formal agreement approving the 1997 turnover of the island, Kowloon and the New Territories back to China. One of the major concepts was “one country, two systems.”

On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong was orderly handed over to China in a ceremony attended by numerous Chinese, British, and international dignitaries. I was in Hong Kong, and still remember being glued to the TV, watching each event of the handover, and wondering what will happen to Hong Kong and whether the concept of “one country, two systems” will work. For us as a family, in 1994 we had decided to leave Vancouver to move to Hong Kong to serve there because of the tremendous need there. Little did we know Lydia and I would be there for 18 years till coming to serve at RCAC in 2012. I am amazed at how time flies and 25 years had gone by since the handover. Memories of the City and its development, both its prosperity and upheavals, flood back to my memory. Nowadays we are constantly reminded of the changes in Hong Kong because of the influx of newcomers from Hong Kong in the last year or so. Now half of the period of the promise of “50 years with no change” has passed, with all the many changes, nothing is certain except change itself. As someone who is from Hong Kong, I keep asking on July 1, what will Hong Kong be like after another 25 years?      (Next issue: Pastoral Reflections on July 1 (2))

你們好。今年 7 月 1 日對我來說尤其發人深省:我是一個出生在香港但多年來一直以加拿大為家的人。7月1日,我們在這裡慶祝加拿大國慶。我知道,因為在這一天我享受了一天假期!今年是加拿大聯邦立國155週年。但對我們來自香港的人,7月1日也有另外一個含義:因為這一天也是香港特別行政區成立25週年的日子。兩個背景截然不同的周年紀念日喚起了我截然不同的感受。

我還記得在加拿大慶祝建國150 週年時,我和師母Lydia,女兒Hannah 和女婿Eugene 一起去了加拿大東部的愛德華王子島省的夏洛特敦市。這裡就是“加拿大”的發源地,討論開始於1864 年,而在1867 年,加拿大便正式誕生。在這一年,憲法1867(英屬北美法案)正式成立。在那次旅行中,我學到了很多關於加拿大及其原住民、殖民、聯邦和移民的歷史。

在那次旅途中,我學到的一件事,那就是“加拿大”這個名字是有著原住民的根源,Huron-Iroquois人的詞“Kanata”,意思是“村莊”或“安置區”,這個名字是給當時的法國探險家和定居者的,指的是Stadacona 村,現在是魁北克市所在地。新不倫瑞克省的Sir Leonard Tilley稱加國為“Dominion” ,據報導他是受到詩篇72:8 的啟發,“他(神)要執掌權柄,從這海(Sea)到那海(Sea), 從大河直到地極。”加拿大宣道會使用 了5S 來表示宣教事工的範圍,而第五個“S”是指“從這海到那海”即是加拿大。作為宣道會牧師的一名,當我想到這些事情的時候,我就向神禱告說:願主真正掌管加拿大,這是個曾經有很深基督教根源的國家呀!

我的思緒也飄到了香港。我們都知道,1997年7月1日標誌了中國在156年後重新管治作為英國殖民地的香港。1839年,英國入侵中國,是因為中國當時反抗鴉片貿易。又由於中國戰敗,被迫在1842年簽訂不平等的南京條約,香港島就被割讓給英國。 1984年9月,經過多年談判,中英聯合簽署正式協議,同意在1997年將香港一帶交還給中國。中國提出了一個“一國兩制”的概念。

1997年7月1日,香港有秩序地移交給中國。我當時在香港,還記得透過電視螢光幕,緊張看著移交儀式,心想知道回歸後香港會變得如何,“一國兩制”的概念是否會奏效?在1994 年我們一家決定離開溫哥華搬到香港事奉,是因為看到在那裡有很大的需要。在那個時候,Lydia和我也沒有想到會在香港事奉18年之久,然後在2012 年來到列宣家服事。時間過得真快,香港已經回歸祖國25 年了。這座城市及其發展的回憶,無論是繁榮還是動盪,都在這個時候湧上了我的心頭。在最近一年,我們目睹了大量從香港來的新移民,因著香港社會發生許多變化。 “50年不變”已經過了一半。但是,變化不斷發生。除了變化本身,沒有什麼是確定的。求主保守香港!

Swallow

Qiao Ji (Swallow), a Chinese Yuan Dynasty playwright & poet, once wrote:

“Springtime Warblers and Swallows,
Beautiful Blossoms and Willows,
Bountiful and Charming Dispositions.”

The emerging swallow unfolds the message of Spring with its spirited ambience.

With its radiant black feather and beaming white plume, the petite swallow looks like wearing a tuxedo.  People adore this birdie enviously for its gorgeous wings and forked tail, with its brilliant eyes and tiny creamy beak! Hovering around, it soars into the blue or dashes down the terrain every now and then; it may also dart through the landscape or burst into the realm at times! No matter how it takes wing, rushing a 180° sharp turn or gliding still in the air, it is graceful always.

The swallow seems never tired, always on the flight! One major reason for this is its frail feet, making it incapable of prolonged standing. Without a hard beak or claw for rummaging at a tree gap or a ground breach, the swallow has to catch and feed on insects like mosquitoes and flies in the air.  It is also believed that having a daily diet of 5,000 insects for a fowl and its young fledgling, it has to work hard for a living without much time to rest!  And when temperature drops and insects are sparse, the swallow has to migrate south for food to survive. That’s why this bird is called the aviary nomad.

 

The swallow comes and goes with the seasons.  Though the bird is a propitious icon welcomed by everyone, it faces lots of challenges.  In each return, the swallow looks for its old nest, which might be unsuccessful in this rapid changing world (a few turns every year, not every 10 years now!).

“Year after Years, like the Swallow,
Wandered among High-seas and Wilderness,
Stopping over under the House Eaves!”
Zhou Bangyan, a Chinese bureaucrat and poet of the Northern Song DynastyLike the swallow that comes and goes, travelling far land and sea, nesting under foreign house eaves, this poet led an unsettling life.

It is also true for this unpredictable world. The COVID rages, the Russo-Ukrainian War bursts out, the Sri Lanka riot breaks out, augmented with global warming causing abnormal weather, marine pollution… We just attest there is no paradise on earth! We can only work hard unceasingly for basic essentials.  We emigrate, maybe back and forth, for a living or for our families. We develop an unsteady sense, like a boat without an anchor, afloat in rough waves, drifting in the water, unsettled!

However, this is not the scene for the children of God. The psalmist wrote:

Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.  (Psalm 84:3-4, NIV)

Let’s take root in the faithfulness and mercy of God, and anchor in His promise.  May you experience God’s almighty richly, enjoy His grace fully, and be His glory in this world!

燕子

親愛的列宣家弟兄姊妹:

喬吉以美麗的詞“鶯鶯燕燕春春,花花柳柳真真,事事豐豐韻韻。”形容燕子的出現,帶來春臨大地的訊息,也傳出生氣勃勃的景象。

小小燕子,一身黑黑油亮的羽,胸前潔白的翎,活像穿上白襯衣及晚禮服。燕子俊翅剪尾,加上炯炯有神的雙眼,配上米黃小嘴巴,可愛得讓人羨慕。燕子穿梭飛行,時掠空而去,時俯沖而來,一時矯捷靈巧如短箭貼地而飛,一時如羽箭直沖雲霄。燕子能突然在空中來個180度急轉彎,也可以翼不振翅不搖的在空中滑翔。燕子飛行,沒有一個姿態不美。

燕子好像永遠在不停的飛,不感疲倦。其中一主要原因,就是牠們的雙腳柔弱,不能長久站立。另外,燕子以蚊子蒼蠅等昆蟲為食,且習慣在空中捕食。牠們沒有堅硬有力的喙或爪,能以在樹縫或地隙中尋找昆蟲等作食物,又(有說)每天需要5000昆蟲為糧及喂養雛燕,所以每天都必須辛勤地工作,沒有什麼可以停下來休息的時候。當天氣漸涼,昆蟲減少,燕子就不得不南遷,以滿足生存的需要。因此,燕子也有被譽為鳥中的游牧民族。

春來秋去的燕子,雖然是吉祥的象徵,沒有一家不歡迎的,但燕子的生活也不是沒有挑戰。從南方回來的燕子,不忘舊巢,但今天瞬間萬變,一年人事幾番新(不再是十年了),回歸的燕子不一定能再找到舊居。正是“年年,如社燕,飄流翰海,來寄修椽”。如秋去春來燕子,翻山越海,棲身他鄉屋椽之間,過的是漂泊不定的生活。

今天變幻莫測的世界亦然。新冠疫情肆虐全球、俄烏戰事爆發、斯里蘭卡動亂,加上全球氣溫上升導致天氣反常、海洋的污染,如此等等都讓我們親眼見證世界沒有一處是樂土。我們也只能因生活的需要,不停的,辛勤的,為生活,為家庭,或遷移,或來回遷徙。生活在如此環境下,不時讓我們感到不踏實,好像沒有錨的船,在風浪中不由自主,隨水漂盪,無法停下。

上帝的兒女卻不必如此。像詩人所記:“3萬軍之耶和華,我的王我的神啊!在你的祭壇那裡,麻雀找到了住處,燕子也為自己找到了安置幼雛的巢。4住在你殿中的,都是有福的,他們還要不斷讚美你。”(詩 84:3-4) 讓我們扎根在天父的信實及慈愛裡,拋錨在祂的應許之中。願你豐豐富富地經歷天父大能,飽飽享受祂的慈愛,在世界面前成為祂的榮耀。

A Childlike Heart

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

During the past weekend, there was a singing in the Cantonese service and one of the lyrics touched my heart. It says: “God’s faithfulness lives in my heart, God answers the prayer of a childlike heart”. Certainly, God will answer the prayer of a childlike heart. This reminds me of a sharing while my sister and brother-in-law came to Vancouver for a visit. They shared one of their experiences in the Philippines while they worked there as Bible translators.

When their daughter Clara was 4 years old, her dad drove 400 miles from the Translation Centre, taking the family back to Romblon Island by ferry before Christmas but the crew on the ferry asked for bribes. Little Clara said: “Don’t give them money, Jesus said ‘no’.” Her mom asked how she knew what Jesus said. Clara told her mom that she prayed to ask Jesus if mom and dad should give them money. Jesus let her saw a big Red X mark. Jesus used a simple way that a child could understand to answer her prayer.

As they refused to give bribes to the crew, cars that came later moved on board but their car was still waiting even they were the 2nd to arrive. Finally after all the cars boarded the ferry, then my brother-in-law drove onto the ferry under the indication of a crew member. As soon as he parked the car, another car which had given bribes tailed his car. The crew wanted to ask him to leave. They knew that it was the last ferry to Romblon before the Christmas season. Suddenly a miracle happened, the crew made a way for that late coming car by asking other cars to squeeze tightly in. Their family could celebrate Christmas with Romblon Islanders at last.

Thank God that He will reveal His will to simple childlike hearts. As Jesus says: “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. ” (Luke 10:21)

May we always have an open childlike heart to listen to God!

「常存赤子心」

親愛的列宣家弟兄姊妹:

在過去的崇拜中,“赤子的祈禱”詩歌的歌詞中提到:「活在我內心,上帝的信實,赤子的真心,求主可應允!」是的!禱告在於真誠,神必應允出於真誠的祈求。詩歌引我聯想起舍妹及妹夫在前一陣子來溫共聚,分享他們在菲律賓倫布島從事聖經翻譯時其中的一個經歷,在此也想與大家分享。

九八年聖誕前夕,妹妹一家由差會中心經過約四百公里的車程,抵達呂宋島南面的描東碼頭,預備乘搭十六小時的渡輪,前往他們作聖經翻譯的倫布島。由於臨近聖誕,船運甚為緊張。他們儘早到達,辦妥一切登船手續。排隊輪候上船。

船員過來幾度施壓,要索取賄賂的金錢才確保車輛可登上渡輪。在壓力重重,威迫利誘下,那時剛滿四歲的小女兒說:「媽咪,主耶穌說不要聽從他們的話。」我妹妹好奇地問她怎麼知道主耶穌這樣說?她滿懷信心地回答:「因為我祈禱問主耶穌,爸爸媽媽要不要給他們錢?主耶穌立刻給我看見一個紅色的大交叉,所以我便告訴您不要給呀!」小小年紀的女兒凱晴雖然不大明白發生甚麼事,卻在默默地祈禱求問主耶穌。主耶穌竟然以小女孩能明白的方式來回應她的求問。
由於他們堅持不賄買船員,本來他們是排在最前第二位的車輛,眼巴巴地看著其他後來的車輛陸續登船也不輪到他們。當全數比他們遲來的車輛也登上船後,他們興幸是最後一輛可登船的車。怎料,剛把車子停好在甲板上,還有一輛車子趕著他們車尾硬碰要登上船。因著那車的人賄買了船員,船員吩咐妹夫把車子駛離船倉回碼頭去,以讓那輛車可以登船。他們深知那是假期前最後的一班船,但仍堅持不賄賂。正當他們按照指示倒駛車子,準備離船時,奇蹟出現。天父竟然感動那些船員回心轉意,要求其他車輛迫得緊貼些,讓那遲來的車輛可以登船,他們便可如期回島和村民共渡聖誕了。

感謝主向孩童單純的心指示祂的心意。是的,誰願意向神全然打開他的心,神的心意必然會向他顯示。主耶穌也說:「父阿,天地的主,我讚美你,因為你把這些事向智慧和聰明的人隱藏起來,卻向嬰孩顯明。父啊,是的,這就是你的美意。」(路10:21)

願我們向神常存單純如孩童一般的赤子之心,與神關係沒有阻隔。
