Pastoral Voice

2023.05.13/14

From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev. Mark Liu

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

It is by God’s Grace that I can use this space to share with you the latest about the Mandarin Ministries.

Before the Lord Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His disciples, including us, a command:

Matthew 28:19-20 “19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations...”

Our Lord commanded us to go and share the gospel. There are many ways to do so. Besides the ministry at Tsawwassen, we have also started a monthly worship at Rosewood Manor, a nursing home, since the end of April this year.

At the end of last year, we contacted the person in charge of the nursing home to explore whether we could conduct worship there once a month. Praise the Lord that we received very positive response. Since the COVID-19 pandemic was still serious at the time, we decided to wait until the spring to start this ministry.

Besides the brothers and sisters from the Mandarin ministry, some brothers and sisters from different Cantonese Congregation also participate in this ministry. On April 30th, a group of 12 people (including two elders, Katherine Yeo and Joe Tong) came to serve in this nursing home.

I am very grateful to the nursing home for providing a staff who is dedicated for coordinating with us. Before the worship started, we witnessed the staff of the nursing home, working hard to bring those who are in wheelchairs or resting in beds to us. There are also some who come on their own. Before the worship started, there were 28 people who live in this nursing home joining us.  Praise the Lord.

We chose two hymns, “Give Thanks” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness” as the first worship hymn. After that, I used John 3:16-17 to share the message. Since most of the participants are English-speaking, I shared the message in English. After sharing, the Holy Spirit inspired me to make a calling. Several people raised their hands, accepting Christ as their own Savior. For those who could not raise their hands, I encouraged them to say “yes”. I remember a resting-in-bed lady who kept saying “yes”.  I was touched.  Thank God, ten friends accepted the salvation. Afterwards, I invited co-workers to go to these people and pray for them. At the end of service, I also got to know a couple who had been missionaries in Haiti. They are now living in this nursing home. Praise the Lord for allowing us to serve, not only to those who have not heard of the Gospel but also those who used to serve the Lord elsewhere.

On the way home, I kept humming “Give thanks” in my heart. Thank God for enabling us to serve, bringing the Gospel to those who live in the nursing home. The Gospel should not stay in church building. The Gospel should reach to different places so that people can hear.

May God bless you all.  May God bless RCAC.

His servant,
Rev. Mark Liu

From the Pastor’s Desk: Rev.Raphael Chow

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

In my high school years, I attended a school in the suburbs with a small river nearby. The school was a seven-story building. Looking out from the classroom on the fifth floor, I could see a lush green meadow and forest on the opposite bank of the river, and in the distance, a small hill about ten stories high. Compared to Lion’s Hill in the distance, this was just a small hill covered with ordinary trees and weeds; it had no grand appearance, no winding mountain path, no towering ancient trees, no unique sights, and no valuable minerals.

In spring, as the trees sprouted and the branches turned tender green, the small hill was awakened and brought to life. Occasionally, the mist would envelop it, making the hill appear to be both hidden and visible. Nevertheless, the hill always had a gentle smile, greeting passersby. In summer, the scorching sun poured down a golden glow, and the hill was suddenly covered in a layer of golden light, showing off its charming dominance. The local cicadas woke up and sang loudly in the trees without reservation. The hill was fascinated by their singing and had not a trace of impatience. In autumn, the leaves turned brown and fell off, and the hill put on a brown coat. The cicadas left, and the cool autumn breeze swept across the land. The sun also went home early. The hill said goodbye to the sun but did not lose its calm hope because it knew that it would see the sun again tomorrow. In winter, the bitter cold wind blew from all sides, and the insects and birds all took refuge. However, the hill was warm and gentle, as if welcoming the coming winter: “Old friend, it’s nice to see you again!”

Year after year, the environment around the hill was not always the same. One year, the green grass under the hill became a junkyard, which was quite unsightly. The hill did not argue or protest but silently offered the land and blessed its users. Once, it was in the height of summer. On that day, there was a heavy rainstorm, and lightning struck the hill when I happened to be gazing at it. Smoke and flames surged, but because of the continuous rain, the smoke and fire were quickly suppressed, and the hill returned to calm. Now, the junkyard is gone, and the grassland is gone, replaced by houses, roads, entertainment centers, and office buildings. The hill remains the same, embracing everything on the earth, whether it’s insects, cicadas, or humans. It offers everything with a smile every day, bringing blessings to the earth.

The hill is not voiceless or soundless. So the poet said, “Let the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains shout together for joy before the Lord” (Psalm 98:8). The hill’s enduring constancy reflects that of the Creator. As the poet wrote, “26They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. … 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end” (Psalm 102:26-27). What is more important is that this true God has thoughts of peace for you, not disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?” (Psalm 121:1)

Pastor Raphael Chow

山丘

2023.05.06/07

Building the House of God

2023.04.29/30

From the Pastor’s Desk:Rev. Collins Kung

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

From January to April 2023, our preaching series begin with the Gospel of John, we learn from the life of Jesus as our model for deeper life.

For the next two months starting in May, our preaching will go back to the Old Testament.  We will study the Book of Ezra – Building the House of God.

The Israelites were God’s chosen people, whom were supposed to be the most blessed ones. However, the Israelites did not respect God as God and serve God exclusively; instead, they turned to worshiping idols. God kept sending prophets to warn them, but they did not listen. As a result, the kingdom of Judah was captured by the Babylonian Empire in 586 BC. From then on, the Israelites were exiled to Babylon and entered a period of subjugation.

However, God’s intention is to discipline them through exile and give them a chance to return. Through the mouth of the prophet Jeremiah, God declared the judgment (exile) and comfort (return from exile).

  • 25:11-12 : “11This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. 12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, making the land an everlasting waste.”
  • Jeremiah 29:10 : “10For thus says the Lord: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.”

God indeed is faithful. The first chapter of the Book of Ezra told us the fulfillment of the prophecy. At that time, the Babylonian Empire had fallen and was replaced by the Persian Empire. In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, Cyrus made a proclamation that the exiled Israelites could return to Jerusalem to build the House for the Lord. This is the first return. In our preaching for the next two months, we shall study chapter 1 to 6, focusing on the returned Israelites and how did they rebuild the House of God. Having God’s help did not mean the building of the House of God was no difficulties or challenges; there were numerous difficulties and obstacles. Finally, under the protection of God and the repentance of the Israelites, the project was eventually completed.

Our preaching series ends at Chapter 7, which tells us how Ezra led the Israelites for the second return and how God used Ezra to rebuild His people.

May we study God’s Words with our heart, I encourage you to read the scriptures (one chapter at a time) prior to worship, to listen to the sermon and to take notes of the sermon.  We learn from the vast experiences of Israelites of their return journey and apply it today to build the House of God.

Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Collins Kung

Pastoral Voice

April 22/23

From the Pastor’s Desk –Pastor Alex Poon

Dear brothers and sisters of RCAC,

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

Three times Paul plead for his trouble – his “thorn in the flesh” – to be removed from him. He longed for his calamity to be removed. And the answer was no.

Instead, God offered him something even more sufficient than the stripping away of pain. Elimination was not the answer.

Rather, something is… grace.

Grace is often defined as “undeserved favor”. It is credit, love, kindness, approval, or acceptance that we can do nothing to earn. We bring nothing, but we are given everything.

I wonder if you’ve ever felt this sort of favor? Have you wronged someone only to be accepted still? Where does this kind of grace come from?

I was reminded recently of a simple but effective metaphor that helped me understand.

What if my friend spilt coffee on my computer? What would make it truly possible for me to forgive my friend? I cannot simply forget the wrongdoing deed – because each time I reached for my computer; it would no longer be available for me. To truly resolve the matter, the debt of the computer must be paid. Either my friend must buy me a new one, or I must buy myself a new one – and only when I have a computer to use again, can the issue truly be settled, and forgiveness made possible.

This is how grace is offered. Through the atoning, substituting work of Christ. Christ takes our place on the cross. He absorbs our debt, in our place. He switched places with us, and now the issue is settled. We are assured of our pardon. We are truly and completely forgiven. The debt we owed for our rebellion against God has been paid. God’s justice and mercy have intertwined in Christ. We are truly undeserving of such favor, but we have been offered it – through Jesus our Savior.

See your life through the lens of grace, and no matter the trouble, you’ll know you’re not alone. Through weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, calamities, you’ll know you have not been abandoned. You know you have favor with our God, who grants you power in the form of relationship and He will carry you through.

May this power, made perfect in our weaknesses, rest upon you now.

Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Alex Poon
